1. New Features

TiVo Desktop has the following improvements:

  • Faster transfers from the media device.
  • TiVo media device can display your PC's folders.
  • You can choose the discovery protocol that TiVo Desktop & media devices use to locate each other on your home network. To change a setting, select "TiVo Server Properties" from the Services menu; click "Network" and then select either "Bonjour for Windows" (default) or "TiVo Beacon".

TiVo Desktop Plus has the following improvements:

  • The video quality for PlayStation Portables has been improved.
  • TiVo Desktop Plus can create videos for playback on additional popular portable media players, such as the Apple® iPhone and iPod Touch, and several models of Blackberry® phones.
  • You can choose to auto-transfer all content of a folder.
  • TiVo Desktop recognizes additional video types based on software that is already installed on your system. As part of this new function, TiVo Desktop Plus software expects the user to install software appropriate for the video file type. The Haali Media Splitter is no longer installed by TiVo Desktop.
  • Apple QuickTime is no longer a prerequisite for TiVo Desktop Plus.

2. Installation

To use TiVo Desktop, you must:

  • Have the "Home Networking Package" installed on your TiVo media device
  • Have at least one TiVo media device with active TiVo service.
  • Connect your TiVo media device(s) to the same network as the computer running TiVo Desktop.

Without at least one connected TiVo media device, the TiVo Desktop software will have limited functionality.

2.1 Minimum System Requirements for your PC

In order to run TiVo Desktop, your computer should meet or exceed the following hardware requirements:

  • 1 GHz P2 or equivalent processor,
  • 512 MB RAM and
  • 5 GB free disk space, plus an additional 1 to 3 GB for each hour of Standard Definition programs you transfer, depending on quality

The following TiVo Desktop features may require more computing resources than the basic computer features:

  • Storage and playback of HD content,
  • Converting TiVo recordings to a portable media device format (TiVo Desktop Plus only)
  • Viewing web content on your TiVo media device (TiVo Desktop Plus only)

If you plan to use these features, we highly recommend that your computer have:

  • 2.2 GHz P4 or equivalent processor,
  • 1 GB RAM and
  • 5 GB free disk space, plus an additional 5GB for each hour of HD programs you transfer.

Your computer must also meet the following software requirements:

  • Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP, with Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later.

Your computer should always meet the minimum hardware requirements for the version of Windows installed, which may differ.

New Zealand content is broadcast in H.264, which puts greater demands on graphics processing when played back on your PC. We recommend that New Zealand users' hardware also include a high performance graphics card and processor, otherwise playback may be flawed.

Due to variations between personal computers, we cannot offer individual specifications. If you run into difficulties playing back high definition videos, we recommend that you transfer and playback standard definition videos.

We also recommend installation of the following software:

  • Windows Media Player 11.
  • Java Runtime environment 1.5.0_06 or higher if running Windows XP or Java Runtime environment 1.6 or higher if running Windows 7 or Windows Vista. You may check the version installed on your machine by going to http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp and clicking the "Verify Installation" button.

Note for users of Windows XP: To run the TiVo Desktop installer, you must have "power user" (i.e. administrator account) administrative rights on your Windows computer. This level of administrative rights is provided by default. If your administrative rights have never been changed, you should be able to install the TiVo Desktop software.

2.2 Other Software

If you are running J. River Media Center or Moodlogic, you must shut the software down before installing TiVo Desktop. Right-click on their respective icons in the Windows taskbar and choose "Exit."

If you have installed any third-party TiVo Desktop plug-ins, including third-party WMA plug-ins or our own example plug-ins from the TiVo Desktop Plug-in SDK, they must be uninstalled before installing the new TiVo Desktop software.

3. Known Issues (Please Read)

3. 1 Release notes

While using TiVo Desktop, you may encounter the following issues:

  • Playback of video from TiVo recordings requires an MPEG-2 video codec like the one included in the upgrade to TiVo Desktop Plus. The Home Premium and Ultimate Editions of Windows Vista include an MPEG-2 video codec and one is also often included with software to play DVDs.
  • Playback of audio from TiVo recordings from some TiVo media devices requires an AC-3 audio codec, such as the one included in TiVo Desktop Plus. The Home Premium and Ultimate Editions of Windows Vista include an AC-3 codec and is often included with software that plays DVDs.
  • An improperly configured router, firewall, or anti-virus software can interfere with the ability of the PC and a TiVo media device to locate each other or to transfer media files.
  • For discs formatted as FAT32, only 4 GB can be transferred, due to the file size limitations of the FAT32 format.
  • When browsing the "Now Playing" list of the TiVo media device, some items may be marked with a red circle with a slash through it. This symbol indicates the item cannot be transferred from the TiVo media device because it is prohibited by the content distributor. Like many other consumer electronics companies, TiVo follows copy protection requirements set by industry authorities.
  • When viewed from the DVR, sorting "by date" organizes the folders according to the date of the most recently recorded video; however, videos within sub-folders are not considered.
  • For a small number of users, the TiVo Server increasingly consumes memory over time.
  • The initial display of the Now Playing List on your computer may be slow. The display speed will increase after the information has been cached on the PC.
  • Users of Windows Portable Media Center devices should use Windows Media Player 11 to convert TiVo recordings for these devices.
  • After creating an Auto-Transfer, it may take some time before all matching shows will be added to the transfer queue.
  • Shows already in the transfer queue are not automatically canceled when the corresponding Auto-Transfer is removed. Also, an incorrect status of "You have an Auto-Transfer for this program" will continue to be displayed and the "Auto-Transfer this Series" button will reappear for each of the items. You may cancel these shows manually.
  • TiVo Desktop has a "transfer history," which keeps the Auto-Transfer feature from transferring the same program more than once, just as the Season Pass recordings feature on the TiVo® media device keeps the same program from being recorded more than once.

If your PC and media device cannot find one another, first check to see if Bonjour for Windows is running on the PC and whether it detects any media devices. You can check Bonjour for Windows by performing the following steps.

1. Launch Internet Explorer.

2. From the View menu, Select "Explorer Bar" and then select "Bonjour". If you do not see Bonjour listed, it may not be properly installed. You can find and install the latest release of Bonjour for Windows at www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows.html.

A window pane should open on the left side of the browser window listing "About Bonjour" and any other devices on your network that use Bonjour, including you media devices.

If you see "Bonjour Service Not Available", you should restart Bonjour by right-clicking on My Computer from the Start menu and choose "Manage", then double-click "Services and Applications". After the control panel opens, double-click "Services" and look for "Bonjour Services" in the list. If the status is not "Started", right-click and select "Start". Note: TiVo Desktop needs to be restarted after restarting Bonjour

If you see "About Bonjour", but your media device is not listed you may be experiencing one of the following issues.

  • Sometimes a media device may not "see" the PC after upgrading to 2.8. Restarting the media device usually resolves this problem.
  • The PC may be attempting to use a different network than the media device. If you have more than one network card or use software virtualization, please make sure the TiVo Server is using the same connection as your media device. You can check the connection by right-clicking on the TiVo icon in the system tray and selecting "TiVo Server Properties." The selected adapter is displayed at the bottom of the tab titled "Configuration" and can be reset with the "Change..." button.
  • TiVo Desktop and your TiVo media device may not be able to communicate while using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection.
  • TiVo Desktop and your TiVo media device may not be able to communicate if the PC or router has a firewall or there is some other network blockage.

If TiVo Desktop is unable to see any media devices, you may wish to change the protocol used by the PC to discover the media devices. To change the discovery protocol, first start TiVo Desktop. Select “TiVo Server Properties” from the “Services” menu and click on the “Network” tab. Select “TiVo Beacon” and click the close button. You will be prompted to restart TiVo Desktop.

While using TiVo Desktop Plus, you may encounter the following issues:

  • The Haali Media Splitter is no longer installed by TiVo Desktop. If you wish to use files with the ".mkv" extension you will need to make sure appropriate software for viewing the files is installed on your PC.
  • The TiVo Desktop Window sometimes does not respond to a restore command if it is minimized and there is a portable device conversion in progress.
  • TiVo Desktop uses the utility "curl.exe" to retrieve web video content to transfer to your TiVo media device. If you are using a firewall on your PC, please allow this utility to connect to the Internet.
  • If the transfer of a web video or user-generated video is cancelled by the user, TiVo Desktop may occasionally transfer the video again.
  • Windows Media Player 11 is required to convert HD quality ".wmv" files for playback on an HD-capable media device.
  • The title of user-generated video content may differ from the file name if there is descriptive information contained within the recording.
  • QuickTime movies or MPEG-4 files with long names or within nested folders that, when combined, exceed 255 characters cannot be transferred to a TiVo media device. These files have a file type of .mov, .mp4, .m4v, or .mp4v.
  • When transferring Web video or user generated video to your TiVo® media device, certain files will consistently fail to transfer completely and will also block subsequent transfers. Restarting your computer will restore the ability to transfer files. Do not make additional attempts to transfer any file that causes this problem.
  • Some file types, such as MPEG-4 (.mp4, .m4v), that may be visible in the Now Playing List for your computer shown in TiVo Desktop, may not play unless a player is selected for the file type. You can select a player for a file type in Windows by following the directions at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320036/en-us.
  • Please note that changing the Portable Devices settings located within Preferences will only affect transfers that have not yet completed. For example, if ten transfers have been queued and you subsequently change the Portable Devices options, TiVo Desktop will prepare the ten pending transfers according to the new preferences as they complete. Likewise, if you turn off the Portable Devices options after five of the transfers have completed, the remaining five will not be prepared as they complete.

While using the Photos 2.0 viewer, you may encounter the following issues:

  • Slideshows in new Photos viewer do not support playing photos in a random order or viewing photos in folders below the current folder.
  • If your computer has more than one network connection, the new Photos viewer may not find the appropriate connection. The viewer supports two IP addresses: a link local address in the 169.254 range (in case DHCP fails to provide an IP address) and one of any other type.
  • HD Photos is not uninstalled when the TiVo Desktop software is uninstalled. If you wish to remove it from your system, please uninstall it prior to uninstalling TiVo Desktop.

3.2 Reporting Problems

Whenever you contact Customer Support with a problem regarding TiVo Desktop, it is useful to have a saved snapshot of logs taken just after the problem occurred.

If you experience any unexpected behavior while using TiVo Desktop, including "access violation" messages, hangs, or crashes, please enable logging, reproduce the problem, and then save a "snapshot" of the logs.

To enable logging, perform the following steps:

1. Open the folder where you installed TiVo Desktop (typically "C:Program FilesTiVoDesktop").

2. Open the file named "LogFinder.exe".

3. Ensure that all check boxes in the "TiVo Desktop Log Finder" window are checked.

4. Click "Close" and follow the on-screen instructions. You may need to restart your computer.

To create a snapshot of the logs after reproducing a problem, promptly perform the following steps:

1. Don't close, exit, or change any TiVo Desktop windows currently on the screen! This may cause logged information to be lost.

2. Open "LogFinder.exe" as above.

3. Click the "Zip Logs Now!" button and follow the on-screen instructions.

4. Click "Close" to exit.

For performance reasons, we recommend that you do not regularly enable logging, or leave it enabled for long periods of time (other than when attempting to reproduce a problem). So, when you are finished logging, turn logging off. Simply follow the same steps you used to enable logging, making sure that you uncheck all the checkboxes before clicking "Close".

4. Security Notice

If your home network has Internet access but does not include a firewall, information on your home network can be easily seen by anyone on the Internet. Most firewall products stop all traffic originating from the Internet, protecting your systems from malicious network attacks or curious browsers interested in the files you have on your computer. A firewall can be installed to protect an individual computer or to protect a whole home network. Because the TiVo Desktop application makes music and photos you publish to your media device available on your home network, Hybrid TV and TiVo recommend that you install a firewall that protects your home network. If your network does not include a firewall, Internet users may be able to access music and photos on your network or even information on your computer, such as personal financial data. Hybrid TV and TiVo strongly suggest you take steps to protect your home network from unwanted intruders. Routers and home gateways, available at most electronics stores, may include a firewall meant to protect your home network.

Note that Windows 7, Windows Vista, and some versions of Windows XP include a built-in firewall, although third-party firewall software can also be used. TiVo Desktop has been tested with the Windows built-in firewall.

You are responsible for security of your home network.
